A research article about a technique for gene editing known as CRISPR-Cas9. The technique has made it much easier and faster for cancer researchers to study mutations and test new therapeutic targets.

The CRISPR/Ca9s system is also being used for high-throughput screening of genes, gene regulatory regions, and long noncoding RNAs. In addition, the CRISPR system is being used for nongene-editing purposes such as activation and inhibition of gene expression, as well as for fluorescence tagging of chromosomal regions and individual mRNAs to track their cellular location.

 · CRISPR has especially had an impact on research using the model organism drosophila, more commonly known as the fruit fly. Prior to gene editing, researchers using drosophila made mutant flies—flies with a specific genetic change relevant to a study—somewhat at random.

 · CRISPR/Cas9-mediated editing of HBB gene in human cells. The human β-globin (HBB) gene, which encodes a subunit of the adult hemoglobin and is mutated in β-thalassemia (Hill et al., 1962).In China, CD14/15, CD17, and CD41/42, which are frame-shift or truncated mutations of β-globin, are three of the most common β-thalassemia mutations (Cao and Galanello, 2010).

 · CRISPR-Cas9 has taken the world by storm with the promise of making gene editing much easier and faster than ever before. But how does CRISPR actually work? How can biology research benefit from it? What will happen when we start using it to edit human DNA? And what’s the fight between its developers all about? CRISPR-Cas9 is one of the biggest discoveries of the 21st century.
