Voice is important because your writing should have as much personality as you do. You've read things that seem to have been written by committee, and it's not a fun experience. A strong voice helps you make every word count, establishes consistency across your website or body of work, and most importantly helps you grab your readers' attention and establish a relationship with them.


Emotional versus detached writing relates to a writer’s style, and it is a common struggle in freshman composition. In trying to address this struggle, I have named these two different kinds of writing (emotional vs. detached) as the spoken and written voice, respectively. Spoken voice refers to the writing that one typically hears in daily conversation.


6. Experiment. Finally, give yourself space to discover your story’s narrative voice. I got lucky with Storming: Hitch’s voice showed up right from the first sentence.That has never happened to be before, and, honestly, I don’t expect it to happen every single time in the future. Usually, you’re going to need to give yourself the space for a few false starts.

As terms, voice and style are often used interchangeably, but the subtle differences in their definitions can lend clarity as you explore your creative identity. Voice is the lens through which you write. It’s the sum of your experiences, values and beliefs, interests, personal preferences, and beyond.


Writing coaches, teachers, and authors of creative writing books often speak of the writer's voice as distinguished from other literary elements. [126] [127] However, as voice is often described vaguely, their distinction may be only superficial.


Your inner creative muscle needs exertion to stay fit and strong — but writing exercises don’t need to be drudgery. They can be fun and exciting as you see how much creative juice you have just waiting to be squeezed. These creative exercises should be practiced without self-judgment, inner filters, or concern about what a reader might think.
